The Visual Index Project

Skatar / 2011-04-30 10:08:46

I love Indexhibit ! but I did come across something they call "Cargo Collective" - which is not at all as cool as indexhibit - no worries...

They have one template I like though, this:

http://projects.renedaalder.com/#

they call it "SpaceCollective"

Can we modify the Visual Index plugin so that it is structured like on that page?

It is just so coooool that all links are visible also after you clicked on one...

please please please...

how can i use this??

i put it with the other exhibits formats... but can't sorted out...

Skatar / 2011-05-27 10:15:20

I managed to create what I wanted, thanks to the help from G470!

7 / 2011-05-27 10:20:42

Looks great Fredrik. Are you releasing this back? ;)

pernin / 2011-05-27 11:11:59

I agree, great work! and yes, please, release this back, a very interesting solution :-)

-- and on another note, I see you worked with Olafur: I can see why :-)

alucidwake / 2011-05-29 11:14:53

this plugin is absolutely fantastic, it's EXACTLY what i was looking for. i was doing this type of thing before manually, but this makes it so much better!!!

so besides the pure thanks, i have a question about ordering. right now, i'm ordering all of the exhibits by 'media_id', but i was wondering if there was to order the exhibits by the 'year' field you enter when you create an exhibit?

when ordering by media_id it orders in this way in certain places, but not others. argh!

a link to my site: http://nickaxel.net

thanks!

Skatar / 2011-05-31 10:12:02

great that you like the design!
always good to get feedback and especially good feedback.

It is a prototype but we are releasing a full version soon.
It is not clean enough yet..

we'll post here !

pernin / 2011-06-01 00:56:09

@alucidwake: I don't know if the visual index plugin will take over, but you have an option to change 'organize' from sectional to chronological in Settings

mauro73t / 2011-07-06 03:06:39

@Skatar: very good design! It's that what I want!
There are some news about it?

bye

Hello! Wow, first off thank you to all of the much more advanced users here and the creators for sharing their knowledge.

I am trying out the Visual Index: main, and am wondering if there is an easy way to get it to only show those exhibits which are active? I am trying it and it shows everything I have done, even things that are hidden. Is there a way around this?

Thank you!

Hello. When i try to use the Visual Index main exhibition format (or the selection exhibition format), nothing shows up at all at the site and in the code it's only "" from the exhibit.visual_index_main.php file that shows up.

Can it be because it's on dev.petercallesen.com instead of www.petercallesen.com?

Any ideas?

I would be grateful for any help you might be able to give!

pernin / 2011-07-30 15:13:59

check with firebug, you have an error on expanding menus that may be breaking things

another alternative, try the visual index masonary, will update your jquery and may work better: visual index masonary

callesen1 / 2011-07-31 00:35:30

I tried both things, but to no avail. tried to run with sample theme to not have the expanding menus bug, and installed the visual index mansonary and it's files.

it's like it cannot find the path for some reason.

dev.petercallesen.com

pernin / 2011-07-31 03:59:39

it appears so, at first, so i went and did a test site in a subdomain, just like you have, and loaded in the visual index masonary:
http://test.kajsadahlberg.com/
and the visual index finds everything allright... i'm stumped, maybe someone else will chip in ;)

callesen1 / 2011-07-31 04:58:55

It's really strange. did you alter the code of the visual index masonary in any way or just put it in the plugins folder?

ps. Very nice work on the site by the way. i'm swedish/danish myself and studies at Kunstakademiet in Copenhagen.

pernin / 2011-07-31 05:12:01

nope, no alteration, just loaded the js, gif and php in each directory

Kajsa's a friend and i helped her get her site up, and also set up this subdomain so she could test different formats and generally play around before making changes in her production site kajsadahlberg.com

kunstakademiet... we probably have lots of common acquaintances, i'm malmö based myself

i'm using the visual index plugin on the main page of my site. what i want now is the thumbs to load not at the top but at the bottom of the page. i already made some editings of the code, but now i don't see how to proceed. the main problem is that the dropdown menu shows up behind the thumbs of the visual index. is there any solution for this problem? thanks for your help

permin,

Still trying to find possible problems. is your test subdomain in the root of the ftp or in a folder?

/oskar

pernin / 2011-07-31 16:40:01

it's a subdomain, so it is its own root

callesen1 / 2011-07-31 17:36:52

ok. because on my hosting, the root of the subdomain is acually in a folder of the ftp root with the same name as the subdomain.

i.e. the files for dev.petercallesen.com is located at ftp.petercallesen.com/dev/

/oskar

pernin / 2011-07-31 17:49:19

what can i say... sounds weird: ftp.callesen.com sounds like your ftp address... and do you have your indexhibit at dev/public_html/ etc?

callesen1 / 2011-08-01 03:33:24

Hmm, maybe i'm not able to explain it properly.

the ftp server i upload my files for the dev indexhibit site is ftp://petercallesen.com/dev/, and translates to http://dev.petercallesen.com/

for example the file i put on the ftp via the indexhibit upload feature has the ftp path

  1. ftp://petercallesen.com//dev/files/gimgs/14_02green800x800.png

but shows on the site with this path

  1. http://dev.petercallesen.com/files/gimgs/14_02green800x800.png
pernin / 2011-08-01 04:17:42

right, it's not a setup i've seen before, so the question would be, have you made a subdomain dev.petercallesen.com in your host's cPanel or directly made a subfolder through your ftp app?

if you have not made a subdomain and your host supports multiple free subdomains and mysql databases, my suggestion would be to make a subdomain and another db, make a second installation of indexhibit and test there

if you did make a subdomain (and that's what dev.petercallesen.com looks like, otherwise it would be petercallesen.com/dev/), then i'm still stumped ;)

callesen1 / 2011-08-01 06:57:00

i just did, created a test.petercallesen.com subdomain and a new database. it took a few hours for it to register and for the short urls to start working, but now its kicking. and behold, visual index works!

thank you for your help and dialogue.

the only difference is that the new database is version 5 not 4. might be the thing that caused troubles.

Any ideas of how to get rid of the duplication of the text?

pernin / 2011-08-01 07:30:01

yes, i noticed about the text in main duplicating. i've been thinking about looking into it, but somehow i never got around to it, so no idea...

i can't think i'm the only one who's noticed this, so a search in the forum should give results :)

callesen1 / 2011-08-01 08:11:41

i've tried, but it seems to have been drowned by other questions about visual index.

pernin / 2011-08-01 09:07:13

duplicated text in visual index:

(i know, it's not elegant, and i'm not 100% sure what i'm doing, but as long as it works...)

it seems visual index both main and section php's plugins are calling up the text probably at the same time and with the same method as the centered theme index.php, so:

edit this part in exhibit.visual_index_section.php and exhibit.visual_index_main.php (both in your plugins folder):

  1.     // ** DON'T FORGET THE TEXT ** //
  2. /*    $s = $rs['content'];
  3.     $s .= "n<div class='cl'><!-- --></div>n"; */

comment out the two lines of code with /* ... */ as in the example above

warning: i have tested this with the centered theme with pages in djuve and thickbox, it could bork any other theme, or other exhib formats with the centered theme

test site: http://indextest.bagofcats.net/

callesen1 / 2011-08-02 12:45:44

Found a double trouble solution..

in exhibit.visual_index_main.php

do this to line 60:

  1.     $s .= $rs['content'];

to

  1.     //$s .= $rs['content'];

and the problem goes away! As you guessed pernin, this was the other place that called up the text.

callesen1 / 2011-08-02 13:15:51

Next problem. any idea of how to exclude some sections id's or to just use a number of selected section id's?

foursix / 2011-08-06 13:59:27

Please help me out with this one, guys. I've been driving myself crazy trying to edit the thumbnail size and margins of the Visual Index Main thumbnals so I can get a clean edge-to-edge grid of thumbnails.

Where can I find these properties in the code? I feel like I've looked at every possible file and discovered nothing.

Thanks so much in advance.

...and your url?

Sir / 2011-09-27 19:24:50

I'm actually having problems with your horizontal sized plugin - well, one problem mainly it doesnt work!

http://www.mat-bryant.com/indexhibitv070e/project/exhibition-1/

Has it selected as the exhebition format, but it gives it a vertical scroll, and also the mouse scroll wheel doesn't scroll horizontally.

Any ideas? :)

thanks

blameme / 2011-09-28 03:10:46

Hello Mr Sir.

Apart from having nothing to do with visual index, it looks fine to me, it only gives vertical scroll because one of those images is so tall, and you can search the forum for solutions to make the scrollwheel activate horizontal scroll, people have done it before.

Sir / 2011-09-28 12:56:44

I apologise, im getting confused betwen threads - should have gone in

Exhibit: Visual Ajax Section Index

as i grabbed the format from his website.

@dancottrell
or who has problem with showing hidden project

  1. write this
  2. AND status = '1'
  1. instead
  2. AND hidden = 0

I`m not sure it`s ok to delete line(hidden = 0)
but it works though.

Hello!! First of all, this is my web: http://www.studio-cof.com/

I've just added the visual index exhibit developed by G470 to the main page. How can I adjust the width and the number of the columns?

Indeed, I want to obtain the effect of these webs, where there aren't any spaces in the same column between the thumbs. How can I do that?

Thanks!!

I am using the visual index plugin on my homepage as an alternative to the side menu.

I have hidden some exhibits but their respective thumbnails are still being shown in the visual index on the home page. Does anyone know how I can solve this?

Thank you so much for this beautiful plugin!

I have a same problem with the thumb size @foursix... you have solved this problem?

the link of myWebpage

Thanks!

which page has the problem?
anyway if you can't read the html source code you can use firebug to see what's going on in your page
