setting up clean URLs on 000webhost

Hi, I'm trying to set up clean URL's on my site which is hosted on 000webhost.com
From looking through plenty of forum posts it looks like plenty of people use this hosting service, so hopefully there's someone out there who's done it.

When I follow the instructions in the tutorial page, after renaming htaccess to .htaccess and changing it to 'true' in default.php, I try clicking the links to my different exhibits and now they just direct me to the 000webhost 404 page.
000webhost says I do have access to mod_rewrite on my hosting account.

The main reason I wanted to get clean URLs is because I decided to do something with my homepage that doesn't follow the theme i've customized. (ex: http://samgordon.net ). To do this I just renamed the Indexhibit index.php file and created a new index.html file, hoping to simply link to my project pages. The three square tiles should be links to my exhibit pages, but when clicked (using clean URL set up or not) they go to the 404 page (only the first tile is linked right now).

So, is clean URLs what i need to be able to link directly to an exhibit page? Because if I go to a project page and copy the URL in the address bar, then paste it into a new window, I also get the 404. So for some reason the only way I can access a project is through the menu links on a regular exhibit page. If not, how do I link these tiles to my exhibits?

I may just change hosts if i can't fix this.

Wow this is long, if you read all this and can answer you're awesome and thank you so much! :D

oh yeah, and I currently have the yelling man tile linked to http://samgordon.net/index.php?/projects/one-one/ because when i go to that page manually, that's what is in the address bar.
