Full Px Images not showing

olid / 2012-04-10 10:00:47

Hi all,

I've been told that some people are unable to see particular images on 2 of my pages.

Any full size images on:
http://www.olidean.com/index.php?/projects/permanent-barker-page-by-page/

Images 4 and 5 on:
http://www.olidean.com/index.php?/projects/permanent-barker/

I can see all through Chrome, IE, Safari, Firefox. The only way i can repeat the issue is through my phone browser. If i upload max size as 600px then they display fine. I'm assuming it must be a resolution or size issue my end but cannot get them to work.

Could someone please help me out on this?

Thanks in advance
Oli

Hi,

Has anyone got any ideas on what might be the problem?

I've found a desktop machine that won't diplay the images now. Have found that i can copy the images into a word document from the site and it image appears fine but just shows the broken image red cross on the web page.

The thread http://www.indexhibit.org/forum/thread/13895/ seems relevant but i dont host locally or anything?

Confused on this, any help appreciated!

I can't see anything wrong from here. Maybe if you could be more precise: is there a specific browser version that shows this problem?

The stock HTC desire browser doesn't display them, nor does IE 8 so far. I've asked those who have also got the problem what browsers they are using and am waiting to hear back.
Doesn't seem to be a problem that occurs everywhere.

I have no idea about HTC desire, never met it ;) unless it's referenced in statistics as some other browser using the same engine, I'd say it's no great problem (if it's less than 1% users accessing the site through that, it'd be a bit of overkill coding for that, IMO)

IE8 is quite another beast, and more of a problem as there still are quite a few users on it. But I never heard of it having a problem in this context. Google for it, see if it's been reported somewhere else, then we'll have a place to start from

Checked on IE8, downloaded one of the images and still couldn't see it in the browser. I opened in my photo editor and saved it again, and then it worked. So it may be an image format problem that IE8 isn't able to resolve.

Process one of them them again in your photo editor, test them by just dropping them into IE8. When you can see it, you can delete that image from your page and re-upload with the new one

Thanks for the information and background pernin. I just heard from someone else who advised they are also using IE8. I'll shrug off the Desire bit as what you've said about volume of users makes sense.
I'll try what you have advised this evening and will post the results.
The solution sounds so simple, it'll probably work!
Cheers.

In summary, the images display fine if i save them as PNG instead of JPEG. No matter what i do with JPEGs on IE8, no joy. Changed to PNG - success!. Lesson learned for me.

Thanks for your help.

Well, the test I did was resaving your image as jpeg, so maybe your image editor is set up to save jpegs in a format that is not readable by IE8. You should test with different save options (I used gimp 2.2 for my test and set it not to include a thumbnail and to save to original image specifications).

There's been reports on IE8 not being able to show jpg's, apparently because the editor was set up to include cmyk information in the jpg's

Of course, if png works for you, then that's alright too

Fair enough, i'll probably get gimp as well as i think you're right about the image editor. It's new so probably why it works with IE9 and not 8.

Anyway, appreciate your input.
