Issues with index.php file and install on hostgator

Hey Vaska,
bought version 2 yesterday, registered an account with hostgator, had them bring the account up through chat support, then installed with filezilla.
got through the first stages of install, just before - Modify your login and password.
where the screen instead said;
"Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_CONSTANT_ENCAPSED_STRING in /home/nedkeefs/public_html/ndxzsite/config/config.php on line 6"

according to the hostgator tech, this was caused by the password i had entered for the mySQL database utilising the ' character.
so we deleted the whole database, reinstalled the files and tried again, bt now there's just a 404 error and when trying to use the php, it tells me I'm already installed.
i realise there is the Multiple installations in the same database section,

but according to the hostgator tech who had a look at the php, the file is corrupted, missing the > symbol at the end.
the one on both my FTP and in my downloads folder (the original) ends with

exit;

Therefore, is this file corrupted, or is this an easy change? where can i find the "database append field"?

my url is edwardmcaliece.com

sorry if this exceeds a concise post; the problem's kinda complex.....

HS is great, but they don't know what they are talking about there - you don't need the > at the end.

Do you use single or double quotes in your login or password by any chance?

i did, but we took those out, so now I'm not sure what the problem is

for the trouble shooter:
Multiple installations in the same database

To use multiple installations of Indexhibit with the same database, simply change the default value of the “database append” field during the installation process, for example: ndxz2_. This must be different for each Indexhibit installation.

where is the "database append" field?

It's on the install.php page.

I would help you out myself but for the next few days I'm doing alot of christmas stuff.

fair enough Vaska, 'tis the silly season after all. I'm trying it through again, and it seems to be working, possibly because this time over i changed the permissions. I left them because it's recommended as safer on 755 and the hostgator guy said it was ok. seems to be back on track, hopefully this is the last of it, thanks for your response.
