some images won't upload

nickgammon / 2013-02-08 14:23:07

ok I've a few questions.... sorry to unload on to you them all at once
1. Why won't some images upload.... (they're smaller than 400 ...I changed options php to 400) and why can't I delete non uploaded image to get rid of the annoying blue question mark...... I have to delete the whole exhibit and start again?
2. Why are colors are desaturated.... although I adjusted image quality from 90 - 100 in options php?
3. Why doesn't slideshow doesn't work in iPad?
4. Also is there a setting somewhere to go back to a liquid pages which are static since I uploaded columnar

Thanks

1. It's clear from your description that your host can't handle the larger images - this is exactly what we have warned about. Your images need to be smaller.
- unfortunately, you will need to delete the images via PHPMyAdmin - this is a known bug...

2.The GD library does that. Most people find that optimizing their images (there are threads about here about this) that you can minimize the problem. Next week I'll make available and update that will hopefully resolve this problem. It's not entirely an Indexhibit but...

3. Slideshow is still in beta.

4. I don't understand the question...

- Are you deleting the images from the backend? Deleting them with your ftp application does not delete them from the database. Use the Bin icon below each image when editing an exhibit.
- Colours are slightly off because on a server image library called GD Libary. Vaska is currently working (and finishing) Indexhibit to work with another library called Imagick. So patience is all we need.
- I didn't see an exhibit using the Slideshow plugin. It is still a beta though. You can try using the latest version (you can find it in the Customize section of this forum)
- I'm not sure what you mean. The address you posted above is not using the Columner Theme (at least, as I write these lines).

ok, but I've been using larger images on this server for more than ten years without any issues..... the problem came about when I tried to upload a lot of images

what I mean by the last question is that the page is no longer liquid/fluid, ie the image resizes according to the size of the browser window

It sounds like your server is having issues of power - again, this is a server limitation - and what we have warned about. Smaller images will help. 400kb is pretty big - you can optimize downwards and still have a great image.

I was never aware that Indexhibit did that kind of resizing - it's not something that we ever setup. I'm sure you can find people who have posted helpful code about this somewhere in the forum.

Maybe your connection got cut off - try reuploading them.

As for relative image size you can utilize this simple css customization for the over and over format. indexhibit.org/forum/thread/17843/
For other formats there's currently nothing around. Of course you can use javascript to get the result you need but again do you want to trust your browser downsampling your images? There is a cost in image clarity...

Thanks guys.... Arsondpi, yep I've been trying to delete them with the bin icon but I can see them on my server, in files/gimgs. The only way to delete them was by deleting the entire exhibit, but when I try to re-upload there are still only some of them there .... although they are on the server .

By the way where can I find PHPMyAdmin?

I'll optimize the images downward...... I just wanted to keep it simple - a bit less than 400 is how they come out of Aperture resized to 1024.

I wasn't using the Slideshow plugin but the visual index

this guys site homeofthevain.com/… does what I'm talking about in terms of resizing image .... I was just wondering because my pages did the same until I tried columnar

Thanks again

Sorry I didn't mention that I tried the Columnar theme but then moved back to the default

Check your folder permissions as well.

You'd have to ask your host about phpMyAdmin.

I'm quite confused. Are you using the Slideshow format or the Visual index with Permalinks? And what seems not to work?

nickgammon / 2013-02-08 17:08:09

I'm using the Visual index with overlay..... it doesn't work on iPad, you only get thumbnails

uploads seem to work if I change the title irrespective of file size..... ie a small file with the old title fails, but at 400 it loads with a changed title works

This thread has been closed, thank you.
