Visual Index Overlay – How do I make it work?

tomsuey / 2013-07-04 18:32:09

Hello! I am very new to Indexhibit and I am basically feeling my way around to try and get my portfolio up and running. I have been searching through the forums to find answers but have not got one so far. My issue is with the index thumbnails on my main page – I would like to have the thumbnails set up with a roll over image/exhibit title like this example:
megantowe.com/
Can anyone tell me how I can do this? My site is lookupspeak.com/
My main question is, is it an edit in the code or is it something that is part of the CMS – dark or light overlays do not do anything and not sure if I can upload a specific image for the 2 states for the visual index... Any help would be most appreciated.
Please do know I am a novice but can do basic edits...
Also a shout out to Indexhibit – am loving the easy set up so far, thank you for making this all available!

What you're after is a customization.
I tried doing this by using css only and it wouldn't work.
You'll need to edit the html in the format as well so there's some work involved.

Hey thanks for the reply - will try and work it out and give it a go.

dark or light overlays do not do anything and not sure if I can upload a specific image for the 2 states for the visual index...

You can change dark/light in Admin > Format > Visual Index options.

Visual indexhibit doesn't have different states - just a thumbnail and a main image.

I'm sure at some point myself or somebody will add more options for more states to Visual Index.

Thanks! Not sure what dark and light overlays are then? If they don't do anything why have a choice? or is this for something in the future?

They don't do anything? Can you show me an exhibit where you are using them and what is supposed to be happening?

Hello! I am not 100% clear on what is supposed to be happening as not sure what the over lay does but can only guess that when you click/hover over the main page thumbnails of all the exhibits the thumbnail goes slightly darker or lighter depending on what you choose – is this correct?
I have set in the Admin section for dark overlay for visual index, my main page is Projects which I have set to visual index. All exhibits in Projects is set for onclick to overlay. So any exhibit in projects should do something right with dark overlay or have I missed a step. I haven't used the attach cover option as this isn't working for me either. I am using the index template – should I be using the media template? Will test one page to see if it makes a difference. My site is lookupspeak.com/

Tried the Media template and everything disappears. So have saved the test page back to index template. Also uploaded a cover image for one exhibit lookupspeak.com/index.php/gday-usa--new-york-philanthropic-dinner/
If you want to see that there is a cover image but it is not showing anywhere other than in the back end when I edit the page. I cleared the cache and still does not appear.

Overlay is an on-click option.
Meaning that if you have Visual Index set as a format and Overlay as the on-click option (select it from the Exhibit Options button) you'll get a modal window (hence overlay) with your image or media.
Just give it a try to see what I mean.

You're using the over-and-over format and as Vaska already said cover images are no use with this format. In order to use cover images you need a format that utilizes thumbnails.

Hi Arsondpi, Thank you for helping me out with this and clarifying what Vaska wrote - I did not understand what he meant but do now, so no cover image for over and over templates. With the Overlay I have done everything as you have listed above with setting up the overlay but nothing happens. I was hoping to get what you described but it just shows a thumbnail image and onclick just goes to my exhibit page which is good but would be nice to get the modal window. Unless that is what I am already getting (the thumbnail is the modal?). Excuse my ignorance if I am asking for something that just does exist in this code.

Ok - so Visual Index has more than meets the eye

Visual index can be set to be a Visual index for all the exhibits in your site with linked images, or all the exhibits of a section with linked images, or it can show the images of an exhibit in four different ways (grow/permalinks/overlay/unlinked).
To activate the overlay you need to have "exhibit" set as your media source (which means that the exhibit need uploaded images)
