using custom fonts

First off indexhibit rules and I am so thankful for it. Ive learned a lot about coding through trial and error here that I thought i never would understand.

I have a question, I know there are web safe fonts, but if I want to add custom, more original fonts to my site, can I do so?

If the answer is yes, can someone help point me towards how to do so? Which files I might need to play with and would I upload the fonts to my ftp so they are there for everyone to see or is the font situation always dependent on the users comp?

Thanks in advance for the help - Chris

Read up on CSS...the answer is 'not really'.

To extend Vaska's answer... also look for "Better CSS Font Stacks". You should be able to find an article that offers some thinking on an approach to choosing fonts for a webpage.

...well, there's sIFR but it's mainly used for display purposes (headings, font demos etc). I think that typophile makes good use of this. There's a jquery sIFR plugin as well...

sIFR is a good option. Be prepared for massive headaches if you want to go this way. It sucks setting up on the best of days. But the results are good.

I found this site for dynamic text replacement while thinking about the same thing. I haven't tried yet, may do so in the future, just don't have time, but it seems well detailed here
