1. how can i make the side margins equal to the bottom margins for my thumbnails? In other words, how do i get rid of all the extra space to the right of the thumbnails
2. how do i get the last image in the grid to float left and not right.

The easiest way is to change the shape of the thumbnail - the natural dimensions in horizontal clearly work differently.
You should also use Visual Index instead of Documenta...
Documenta is really intended to be used with a good amount of text.
