I wonder if it is possible to have the visual index exhibit and not show the titles of the thumbnail images but when you click and it becomes a slideshow I would like to have titles under the images?

You either need to delete or hide the titles.
Hiding the titles could be done even with css...
Just search the web about his - you can use a text-indent: -9999px; or color: transparent; to hide them. There's lots of ways.

Yes - ...but tatjer I read your question again and... have you tried setting Titles to Off and the On-click option to Permalinks (via exhibit options). It might be just what you need...
I did a mistake! I mean Documenta and not Visual Index! In Documenta I can not take away the thumbnails titles. But I will try what you said before about css-editing..
