I'm looking to find something that could point me in the dirrection of moving my sections to the top vs the side.

how to add a color behind them to color block it away from the rest of the site and how to make it so when you click on one of the sections that it would actually take you off my site and onto a tumblr.

or would I need to add my tumblr to my hosting site and make it so its a mywebsite.blog.com

instead of a click for myblog.tumblr.com

Have you checked the Columner theme in the Customize section of this forum?
For further customizations use FIrebug the Firefox plugin to target to appropriate css classes and use css to affect them - basic coding skills are needed.
As for the last question simply Create an Index link from the Create link in the top right in the main page of your backend.
