cannot connect or install database

gregor / 2008-02-11 13:41:03

I was loathed to bother you with an instalation problem that, having read through the forum, I can see you have had to deal with countless times over. Be that as it may, I am at my wits end trying to get indexhibit up and running on my site - www.gregortimlin.com

I have been through the details more than once with my service provider, but when I fill them in on (http://www.gregortimlin.com/ndxz-studio/install.php?page=2) I keep getting the same resonce...

XX We cannot connect or install the database.

Can you please take a look at it and instruct me as to where I have messed up.

Thanks

Greg

Are your connections strings rather long? LIke more than 25 characters or something?

gregor / 2008-02-11 14:39:41

By conectiion strings you mean ,Database Server, Database Name, Database Username and Database Password? If so - no. Otherwise... I'm new to this - conection strings?

Something is up here...

Vaska A / 2008-02-12 19:04:07

Gregor, what is your database server connection string?

Sisu's is an IP address...which is wrong. This is usually where things go wrong for people.

Vaska A / 2008-02-12 21:15:47

Are you capitalizing localhost. You should not.

sisu / 2008-02-13 11:33:26

No i'm not....

gregor / 2008-02-13 15:36:09

Ok here’s what I can tell you, this is how I’ve been trying-

Exhibition Name – gregor timlin
Database Server – localhost (also tried ftp.gregortimlin.com and mysql.gregortimlin.com -which my web host said it would be)
Database Name – sm13839
Database Username – sm13839
Database Password - ****

To access my server info you can log in www.switchmedia.co.uk
Customer login – www.gregortimlin.com
User name – sm13839
Password - ****

My web hosting guy’s could only tell me database server connection string would vary depending on what language I am using – here’s the info on my admin page. I don’t know if this helps.

Server version: 4.0.24_Debian-10sarge2-log
Protocol version: 10
Server: Localhost via UNIX socket
User: sm13839@localhost
MySQL client version: 5.0.32

I’m happy to send you my password so you can get whatever info you need. I just couldn’t see an email address for you on the site and I’d prefer not to post it.

Vaska A / 2008-02-13 18:56:46

Gregor...found the problem. I'm not sure of the meaning of it yet though. Will you send me the ftp info to your site...I'd like to look at things.

Sisu is already installed too.

A contact email is all over this site for us... contact [at] indexhibit [dot] org

Vaska A / 2008-02-13 20:15:59

We've solved this...for the moment. If you are experiencing similar problems and you are 100% sure your connection data is correct (confirm them with your host) then this might work for you.

What's happening is that it does connect to the database but when it gets to the point where it creates the tables it fails. So...

- check to see if /ndxz-studio/config.php; if it does delete it
- then change line 52 in /ndxz-studio/install.php to be the same as line 48 (identical)

Then install...should work fine.

This will be fixed in a minor bug update tomorrow.

scotilla / 2008-07-05 16:17:01

HI I keep having the same problems as many on the help forum, though I still can't figure out what the problem is. My URL is: ambrosinodesigns.com

I keep getting the error message 'database not installed' because when I try to do install at URL http://ambrosinodesigns.com/ndxz-studio/install.php [[I've copied the files into my root directory of public_html]] I keep getting the error message 'XX Please check your config settings again.'

I've followed the directions for setting up Indexhibit precisely. I've set up the MySQL database; I have uploaded my files via cyberduck to my ROOT directory of public_html (again got this from my tech hosting guy); I've changedthe permissions for: files; gimgs; and config (in ndzz-studio folder) to 777.

I've directed my browser to: http://ambrosinodesigns.com/ndxz-studio/install.php and entered the info from above but it still is not working.

PLEASE help, what am I doing wrong here??
I greatly appreciate any and all help offered.
Scott

My server is register.com. they have PHP v. 5.2.5; MySQL v. 5.0.51a-community

scotilla / 2008-07-05 16:18:32

dear vaska:
what does this mean:
- check to see if /ndxz-studio/config.php; if it does delete it

thank you,
scott

Vaska A / 2008-07-05 16:19:17

Username is wrong...if you search something like 'config' you will find a ton of posts about this. You ask your host...you check and triple check. We've seen this billions of times.

And NEVER post your login and password info in a forum...

Sorry for bringing up this old topic again but I'm at the end of my wits.

Just installed a brand new XAMPP (1.7.4) on my Linux machine (Kubuntu 10.10). It worked out of the box. Also installed Wordpress and Joomla without any problems. Since I think Indexhibit would serve my purpose, the presentation of photos, better than these big CMS I tried to install it as well following the instructions given on this site. Unfortunately install.php was not able to access the database giving this error message:

XX We cannot connect or install the database.

The database exists. I set it up according to the instructions given for Wordpress an Joomla. Just called it indexhibit, its type is collation and it uses utf8_general_ci as char set.

As I already mentioned these settings worked for Wordpress and Joomla. Why can't Indexhibit access the database?

Besides this crucial problem I always get error messages while trying to set up Indexibit. I'm not sure if they mean any major problem.

Deprecation warnings...things work just fine otherwise. Just disable the reporting of deprecation notices for the moment.

knut / 2011-01-31 13:01:00

But whats wrong with my database setup?

The database is called indexhibit, is of type collation and uses the charset utf8_general_ci. User is called indexhibit as well.

Send the contents of config.php:

Don't worry, this is a test system and not online.

Can you tell me what I have to change in my setup?

Thanks Knut

Sorry for posting three times. After posting I always got an error message saying that the page didn't exist. Going back it looked that I didn't manage to post. So I posted again.

How can I delete two of the three posts?

Vaska A / 2011-01-31 16:32:00

You can't. Is this resolved?

knut / 2011-01-31 16:48:20

What do you mean? The database connection problem is not solved yet. Have no clue what it is caused by.

Vaska A / 2011-01-31 16:57:01

We can't support offline servers because there are simply too many things that could go wrong, sorry.

knut / 2011-02-01 13:59:07

Thats a pity. But I didn't expect you to support my installation. Just was wandering why inexhibit doesn't install the database while Joomla, Wordpress and Gallery don't have any problems doing it.

But maybe someone else encoutered the same problem and had found a solution. Tried to track down the error and got the imnpression that install.php can connect to the mysql server and select the right database but fails to execute @mysql_query($install); in install_db(). My knoladge about SQL and mysql isn't good emough to figure out why.

If anybody has an idea how to alter the install.php to make it work, i'd be greatful for a hint.

suwak / 2011-10-15 10:16:08

knut, have you managed to resolve this problem?

I'm stuck at the same point. I'm trying to design my site offline using wamp server on windows. After altering a bit a code in default.php I'm able to run the instalation until this problem with database occurs.

I've found a dozen threads in which Vaska says they don't support offline instalations, so maybe there's some user to user solution.

wfsean / 2011-10-26 18:02:18

I was able to solve the "We cannot connect or install the database." error on a MySQL 5.5 host by changing line 54 in install.php from this...

  1.     $isam = 'TYPE=MyISAM';

... to this ...

  1.     $isam = 'ENGINE=MyISAM';

Hope that helps!

Hello
Struggling to connect to database during install on two different projects. In the config.php this info is updated and put into tables, but apparently this does not exist.
Both Webhotels are on webservers with Apache HTTPD running under Linux. Got Support for PHP 5.3 og MySQL 5.5.

Anyone who can help?

Project1
Project2

Successfully installed it earlier on this page,
so confused as to why it's not working this time.

Hoping for a positive reply

Vaska A / 2012-02-21 10:59:24

What version of MySQL is the successful installation using?

ergo / 2012-02-21 14:45:20

I think that is 5.1

ergo / 2012-02-22 05:45:09

It is MySQL version 5.1

ergo / 2012-02-22 06:23:43

My host says "777 won't work on their servers, since files with permissions 777 won't be run by the server. This is to protect access from others", even if it is changed back to 600 or 640 after install - Any way to work around this?

Vaska A / 2012-02-22 07:09:06

How did you install before then? They don't advise on an alternate to 777?

ergo / 2012-02-22 07:22:35

When I installed this site I set all to 777 when installing, then changed it after completion.

ergo / 2012-02-22 07:26:10

It is now set to 755 on mentioned site.
Emailed host to ask if they have an alternate permission that is allowed.

ergo / 2012-02-22 08:01:40

Host says alternative is 755, tried that as well - did not work. (Deleted all files, reuploaded via ftp, reset all permissions, tried 777, 755, 757 - still not working)

ergo / 2012-02-22 08:36:11

Host found solution for MySQL 5.5 in this forum string

Now all seems to be working!

Robandfugl / 2013-01-20 22:45:45

Dear user of the forum

I ran into the same problem at installing the database - and I get the message:

XX check config

I tried the above solutions without help. My database is mysql 5,1

Any other surgestions to make your way around this?
